CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

“We need to know what that link is,” Ivy said, running them through the possibilities. “If there was a partial match with Maeve Wetherford, the mother of the bride, and with Nancy Wetherford, the bride,” Ivy said slowly, processing, “was there a match with Nancy’s father, Rory Wetherford?”

Byrne shook his head slowly, then said loudly and clearly, “No.”

Campbell sat back. “Well, that’s very interesting.”

“So Ryan Eva is related to Nancy Wetherford,” Ruby said. “I guess that answers why he was invited to the wedding.”

“He wasn’t invited,” George reminded her. “He wasn’t on the guest list.”

“Well, maybe he felt that he had a right to be there.”

“A partial match,” Campbell said. “So that means brother or cousin or?”

“Katy said the match to Maeve Wetherford indicated parentage, and the match to Nancy Wetherford suggests half-sister.”

“How does it suggest that?” Byrne asked, and Ivy took the spare pen from the tray beneath the whiteboard.

“Our DNA comes from our parents,” she started. “We get fifty per cent from our father and fifty per cent from our mother.” She wrote mother, father, and child in a Y-shape, with the child at the bottom, then connected them with lines. “There’s more to it than that, but you get the gist.” She checked to make sure he was following. “If Ryan Eva’s DNA suggests that he and Nancy were step-siblings…” She added in another father to the right of the mother.

“Then he’s a child from another relationship,” Byrne said, nodding to show he understood. “Because the father is different.”

She clicked the cap back on the pen, then reached for the rag to wipe it clean.

“Leave that,” George told her. “Let’s just let that sink in, shall we?” he turned to Byrne. “Any other matches?”

“I mean, there were plenty. Like you said, it was a wedding. There were matches between the groom and his family, the bride and her family, and other partial matches with other guests. But those were the only connections to Ryan Eva. Just Maeve and Nancy Wetherford.”

“Well, she must’ve recognised him then,” Campbell said. “When she saw him in the pool. Nancy must’ve recognised her half-brother.”

“You’d think so, wouldn’t you?” George said, almost to himself.

“And the mum,” Byrne said. “Surely she would have recognised her own son?”

“She didn’t see the body. The only people who saw the body before we arrived were the bride, the groom, and the photographer.”

“Well, how’s this for a theory?” Campbell said. “Maeve Wetherford had an affair with Ian Eva. The question is, did Rory Wetherford know about it? Or did the child of his wife’s affair just turn up on his daughter’s wedding day? A man who is quick to anger wouldn’t take that lightly. I think that gives him a motive, don’t you?”

The question hung in the air.

“The problem isn’t finding a motive for someone,” George said. “The problem is narrowing down the people with motives. This is a lot to work with.” He turned to the board, which was beginning to look more and more like a collage; any cohesion between the elements was limited at best.
